Last week, we reported on the lineup for the Venice Film Festival, which will begin August 30th. Although the New York Film Festival will begin nearly a month later (Todd Haynes’ May December is set to open the festival September 29th), the collection of movies is just as eclectic and interesting as the former.

Many of the same movies will overlap between the upcoming slate of festivals, but there are always some unique differences between the two. The NYFF is also held in the United States – possibly the first time many of those in the States will be able to see some of these heralded movies.

Many of these releases seem to be set in stone, but there’s always the possibility that a few movies get pulled from the lineup due to the ongoing strikes by the SAG-AFTRA and WGA. We wrote about the postponements of movies like Challengers and Drive-Away Dolls, but there’s a chance more get pushed back if movie stars aren’t able to market their own films and attend these festivals.

Unlike many other notable film festivals, the New York Film Festival does not host competition between the selections. Instead, they choose a trio of opening night, closing night, and centerpiece pictures to headline the festivities.

Notable movies at the 2022 New York Film Festival included White Noise, Aftersun, Stars at Noon, and Armageddon Time.
