Beware Boiúna is scary, and it is a lot nastier than most giant snake movies. Mike P. Nelson’s creature feature follows a humanitarian medical team, including Jessica Rothe and Kiana Madeira, as they travel down an Amazon river. After a violent run-in with rainforest contractors, a vengeful Logan Marshall-Green pursues them into protected waters, where an enormous ancient serpent that may be Boiúna, the mythical snake of Brazilian folklore, is waiting. Rather than going for camp, the film plays its premise completely straight.
10 Horror Movies Like Beware Boiúna
Much of the fear in Beware Boiúna comes from how long Nelson waits to show the monster. The sweaty, isolated jungle setting builds dread early, and the snake is first seen only in fragments, a Jaws-style approach that makes its full reveal land harder. Once it arrives, the creature’s speed underwater and its ability to vanish into dense jungle make it a genuinely frightening presence, far removed from the cheesy creatures of cable TV monster movies or the 1997 Anaconda.

Is Beware Boiúna Gory?
Beware Boiúna is bloodier than many viewers will expect, including mangled and crushed bodies, grisly aftermath from the snake’s attacks, and even some stomach-churning early scenes involving parasites, so squeamish viewers should be prepared. The film relies more on sustained dread and sudden attacks than on a constant string of jump scares, and its grim tone leaves little room for comic relief. For fans of serious creature horror, it is one of the scarier monster movies of 2026.
