One Battle After Another

One Battle After Another (2025)

Few recent films balance family, gunfire, and gallows humor as confidently as Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Bob Ferguson, a frazzled former radical living off the grid with his daughter Willa, until Sean Penn’s Colonel Lockjaw drags the past back to their doorstep. It’s a sprawling, nervy thriller that never lets its tension slack, and it ranks among the best movies of 2025.

The Killer (1989)

The Killer (1989) movie poster

John Woo’s The Killer is the blueprint for the hitman with a conscience. Chow Yun-fat plays Ah Jong, an assassin who accidentally blinds a singer during a job and agrees to one final contract to pay for her surgery, only to find an unlikely kindred spirit in the detective hunting him. Operatic, sentimental, and staggeringly violent, it’s a stone-cold classic and a strong case for Woo’s best work.

John Wick: Chapter 4

John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)

Sinners

Sinners (2025)

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners treats faith, music, and community with the same seriousness as its bloodshed. Michael B. Jordan doubles up as twin brothers who come home to the Mississippi Delta to open a juke joint, and the night that follows turns into a genre-bending fight for survival. Like Bassam Tariq’s film, it’s rowdy and entertaining, but it always has something on its mind.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout

Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)

Critics coming out of Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother couldn’t stop comparing its brutal opening bathroom brawl to the one in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, so it’s only fair to revisit the original. The Card Counter

The Card Counter (2021)

Latif’s military past and wrestling match with his conscience share plenty of DNA with Oscar Isaac’s William Tell, a former military interrogator who tries to outrun his sins at the blackjack table. Paul Schrader’s follow-up to First Reformed is patient and austere, but its slow-burning examination of guilt and grief hits like a sucker punch.

The Killer (2023)

The Killer (2023)

David Fincher’s The Killer is a colder, more clinical take on the professional assassin. Michael Fassbender plays an unnamed hitman whose meticulous routine falls apart after a botched job, sending him on a methodical revenge tour against the people who hired him. Tilda Swinton co-stars, and Fincher’s exacting control behind the camera makes the whole thing a triumph.

Highest 2 Lowest

Highest 2 Lowest (2025)

A kidnapping sets Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest in motion, and the film is just as interested in the moral weight of a family crisis as it is in the chase. Denzel Washington leads this modern take on Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, which Lee directs with plenty of swagger and style. It’s also one of the more upbeat thrillers on this list.

Blade

Blade (1998)

Mahershala Ali and Bassam Tariq were once attached to Marvel’s Blade reboot, and plenty of critics have called Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother the better use of that partnership. Stephen Norrington’s 1998 original is a stylish slice of pulp that has aged unevenly, but Wesley Snipes’ charisma and the slick fight choreography still carry it.

Knox Goes Away (2024)
