Although easily his least accessible and structured movie, Beau Is Afraid still manages to work due to Aster‘s distinct eye for jaw-dropping images and scenes and Joaquin Phoenix‘s committed performance.

Sean Baker’s Prince of Broadway serves as a fascinating blueprint for the themes and techniques he would later refine in his career. As Baker’s second feature, the movie provides an early look at his distinctive ability to blend chaos, intimacy, and authenticity into his storytelling. It’s a work that feels vital, a glimpse of an auteur beginning to explore the layers of the human experience through characters navigating the margins of society.
Turning Red
Despite feeling a bit like Pixar is borrowing heavily from their contemporaries, Turning Red is the first movie from the studio to actually move the needle in a while. It’s a story for generations to enjoy, and I always prefer when Pixar aims to appeal to older audiences in conjunction with the usual kids demographic.
