Avant-Garde

Avant-garde refers to art that deliberately pushes against established norms, and in film it usually means work that experiments with form, structure, and technique in ways that can feel unfamiliar or challenging. Avant-garde films often reject conventional storytelling, like clear plots, traditional character arcs, and straightforward cause-and-effect editing. Instead, they might use abstract imagery, unusual rhythms, non-linear structure, or unexpected sound and visual relationships to create meaning. The goal is often exploration rather than entertainment in the usual sense.

Examples can range from short, purely abstract films to longer works that blend narrative with experimentation. A filmmaker might use rapid montage, distorted sound, or repeated images to evoke a feeling rather than tell a story, or they might focus on a single concept, like time passing, bodily movement, or the texture of light. Classic examples often cited include Maya Deren’s Meshes of the Afternoon and Stan Brakhage’s Mothlight, while more accessible “avant-garde leaning” titles might include Koyaanisqatsi, which builds its impact through music and imagery instead of dialogue and plot. Even when it is hard to describe, the defining trait is that the film’s style and structure are the point, not just the vehicle for a story.
