Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG)

HLG stands for Hybrid Log-Gamma, a type of HDR designed with TV broadcasting in mind. It’s one of the HDR systems defined in the ITU-R Rec. 2100 standard, and it was developed by the BBC and Japan’s NHK.

What makes HLG different from formats like HDR10 or Dolby Vision is that it’s built to be more “broadcast-friendly.” It can carry HDR in a way that can still display reasonably on standard dynamic range TVs, without relying on HDR metadata. In simple terms, an SDR TV treats the signal more like a normal image, while an HLG-capable HDR TV can interpret it for a wider brightness range. That’s why you’ll often see HLG mentioned around live TV and events like sports, where compatibility and reliability matter.
