Here are Cinephile Corner’s picks for the 10 best Tom Cruise movies, ranked:

10. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning (2023)

Dead Reckoning surpasses many recent action movies, using Tom Cruise’s death-defying stunts as a reason to see them by themselves. Despite a few nitpicks, nothing compares to the practicality that the new Mission: Impossible movie offers.

9. Magnolia

Magnolia (1999)

Magnolia might feel a bit like the film that got away from Paul Thomas Anderson (because it kinda is), but it’s the sort of big-budget passion project that up-and-coming filmmakers rarely get to make nowadays. The ensemble cast of Magnolia is littered with A-listers and common Paul Thomas Anderson players, from Julianne Moore and Philip Seymour Hoffman to Tom Cruise and John C. Reilly, each actor adds their own weight to this shotgun blast of characters.

6. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is not just one of the best entries in the franchise—it’s one of the best action films of the 2010s. It reenergized the series with a bold new direction by Brad Bird, brought in a fresh ensemble, and delivered set pieces that rival anything else in modern blockbuster cinema. Tom Cruise returns once again as Ethan Hunt.

3. Top Gun: Maverick

Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

Years removed, Top Gun: Maverick still feels fresh – for its direction, for its acting, and for its precise attention to emotion and payoff. Every moment feels important and finely tuned, and every actor and actress fits perfectly within this nostalgia-laden juggernaut. A real hit, and one of my favorite movie theater experiences of all time.

1. Mission: Impossible – Fallout

Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)

Mission: Impossible – Fallout isn’t just the high point of its own franchise—it’s a modern action masterpiece, arguably one of the greatest action films ever made. As the sixth installment in the Mission: Impossible seriesFallout takes everything that made the previous films thrilling and dials it up to a level that almost feels physically exhausting—in the best possible way.
