4K is a video resolution standard that delivers a much higher pixel count than 1080p HD. In most home viewing contexts, “4K” refers to 4K UHD, which is 3840 × 2160 pixels. That works out to about 8.3 million pixels on screen, which is four times the pixel count of 1920 × 1080. You will see 4K on TVs, streaming apps, and disc releases as a shorthand for sharper detail and a cleaner image, especially on larger screens or when you sit closer.
It is also worth knowing that not all “4K” is identical. In commercial cinemas, 4K often means the DCI standard of 4096 × 2160, which is slightly wider than home UHD. You will also run into terms like “native 4K” versus “upscaled,” where the source material or finishing process may be lower resolution but mastered for 4K delivery. And resolution is only part of the picture. Many 4K releases also include HDR (like HDR10 or Dolby Vision), which can improve highlights, shadows, and color, sometimes making a bigger difference than the extra pixels. For example, a 4K UHD Blu-ray can look noticeably more dimensional than a standard Blu-ray because of both higher resolution and HDR, assuming the transfer and disc encode are done well.
