‘Eddington’ Poster and First Image Teases Ari Aster’s Follow-up to ‘Beau Is Afraid’

Ari Aster’s next film, Eddington, is set to premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, and with that announcement comes the first official look at the movie—a cryptic, haunting poster and a tense image still from the film. This marks Aster’s debut at Cannes, following a trio of increasingly audacious features: Hereditary, Midsommar, and Beau Is Afraid.

The first image for Eddington captures a confrontation between a small-town sheriff, played by Joaquin Phoenix (Napoleon, C’mon C’mon, Beau Is Afraid), and the town’s mayor, portrayed by Pedro Pascal (Gladiator II, Freaky Tales). It’s a charged moment set against a dusty Western backdrop, hinting at the film’s political and psychological tension.

Distributed by A24, Eddington is set in the titular New Mexico town, and according to the official synopsis, the story takes place in May of 2020, where a standoff between the sheriff and mayor sets off a powder keg, turning neighbor against neighbor. The premise suggests a modern Western infused with the kind of surreal paranoia that Aster is known for.

The film boasts an impressive supporting cast, including Emma Stone (Poor Things), Austin Butler (Dune: Part Two), Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, and William Belleau. It’s also shot by acclaimed cinematographer Darius Khondji, whose recent work includes Mickey 17 and Uncut Gems.

There’s no confirmed release date for Eddington yet, but given its Cannes premiere, a late summer or early fall theatrical run seems likely. A trailer is expected to drop soon.
