Dolby Vision

Dolby Vision is a premium HDR format designed to deliver more precise brightness and color mapping than standard HDR10 in many cases. Its big feature is dynamic metadata, which can adjust the HDR instructions scene by scene, or even shot by shot, based on how the content was mastered. That gives compatible TVs more guidance on how to display highlights, midtones, and shadows without losing detail. Dolby Vision is also built to support higher bit depth in the format’s pipeline, which can help reduce banding and improve subtle gradients, though what you actually see still depends on the specific release and your display.

In practical terms, Dolby Vision can be especially noticeable in challenging images that mix bright highlights with deep shadows. For example, a scene with sunlight blasting through a window can keep the outside view from turning into a white blob while still preserving detail in a dim room. Or a neon-lit night sequence can keep bright signage punchy without crushing the surrounding blacks. To benefit, you need a Dolby Vision-capable TV or projector and a source that outputs Dolby Vision, such as a UHD Blu-ray player or a streaming device and service that supports it. If a setup does not support Dolby Vision, most releases fall back to HDR10, so the content still plays in HDR, just without the dynamic metadata layer.
