The Venice Film Festival recently announced their 2023 lineup, including a handful of highly anticipated auteur projects and Oscar-bait.
Among the incredibly diverse and heralded projects that will compete for the Golden Lion are new movies by Michael Mann, David Fincher, Bradley Cooper, Sofia Coppola and others. There are many movies that are being premiered out of competition as well, including a brand new Woody Allen movie, and Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar for Netflix. The entire list of selections is located towards the end of this article.
The Venice Film Festival is scheduled to be held between August 30th and September 9th. This year may look quite different compared to previous years for the festival considering the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike preventing many movie stars from promoting their own movies. This may result in an uninspired, not so glamorous red carpet ceremony absent from the likes of Adam Driver, Michael Fassbender, Emma Stone, and others.
Before last week, it seemed certain that Zendaya would also be present in Venice for the premiere of Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers. But the tennis flick was one of the first significant releases to be delayed due to the strike. If there isn’t an agreement made before the film festival, there will certainly be an odd aura in the air leading up to each film’s premiere showing.
All the Beauty and the Bloodshed (Laura Poitras) won last year’s Golden Lion award for the best picture in competition. Other films that competed included The Banshees of Inisherin, Bones and All, and Tár.
