Adam Sandler does technically appear in Roommates, but don’t go in expecting a starring role or anything close to it. He shows up in a brief cameo as Danny Schilling, a character connected to Sarah Sherman’s Dr. Robyn Schilling, the Dean of Student Life who serves as the film’s de facto narrator, framing the story of Devon and Celeste’s chaotic freshman year. It is very much a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, the kind of wink-at-the-audience appearance that Sandler has dropped into other Happy Madison productions over the years.
If you are coming to Roommates hoping for an Adam Sandler vehicle, you will want to recalibrate your expectations entirely. The film centers squarely on Sadie Sandler, who plays Devon Weisz, a shy and introverted college freshman navigating her first year at college, alongside Chloe East as her roommate Celeste.
This is Sadie’s project through and through, and Adam’s involvement is largely behind the scenes as a producer through his Happy Madison banner. His on-screen cameo is more of a family easter egg than a meaningful role, so if you want the full Sandler experience, this probably is not the film to scratch that itch.
