Drive-Away Dolls Delayed to 2024

The Ethan Coen-directed Drive-Away Dolls is the latest casualty of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. The movie, which was slated for a release in September, is now scheduled to be released in February 2024.

It was inevitable, but Drive-Away Dolls has been delayed to 2024.

Drive-Away Dolls is the first solo effort by Ethan Coen without his brother Joel (who directed The Tragedy of Macbeth by himself back in 2021). The movie was preparing for a September 22nd release date prior to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. With the inability of actors and actresses to promote their releases until the strike is resolved, many studios are pushing back the release dates of their Awards-bait, star-led pictures.

This was the case with Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers, which saw it’s release date pushed back to 2024 last week (moving from September 15th to next April). Drive-Away Dolls now joins the lengthy list of movies delayed until the labor strike ends, with no end in sight as we head into the fall. The entirety of Sony’s 2023 slate already suffered this fate, as well as Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things (which may still have slim hopes of a December 2023 release).

Drive-Away Dolls stars Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan as two free spirits in dire need of a fresh start. The two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals along the way. The trailer gives major whiffs of early Coen brothers projects, most notably their debut feature Blood Simple.

According to World of Reel, Drive-Away Dolls test screened recently to moderately positive responses. Although maybe not Ethan Coen’s magnum opus, it’ll surely be a fun and interesting new endeavor for the visionary working without his close brother. A trailer for the movie was released a while back and can be found here.

This news obviously has an impact on the upcoming awards season race, which has already seen a number of prestigious flicks drop out. The aforementioned Challengers and Poor Things both seem primed for an Oscars race more than a year away, while potential blockbuster releases like Dune: Part Two and A Haunting in Venice may be next.

With no end in sight for the SAG-AFTRA strike, many of the new release dates are simply placeholders that could be updated at any moment. After the box office surge brought on by the Barbenheimer double feature, it’s a shame that we’re destined to return to an uninspiring release schedule and dwindling box office numbers.

The tentative new release date for Drive-Away Dolls is February 23rd, 2024.
