The official lineup for the 78th Cannes Film Festival has been revealed, and it marks a notable return to Hollywood-heavy prestige after a few years of industry disruptions. With the 2023 and 2024 editions leaning more heavily into international titles amid the ongoing Hollywood strikes, the 2025 Cannes Film Festival swings back toward a more star-powered, English-language presence—while still maintaining the international diversity the festival is known for.
Among the highlights is The Phoenician Scheme, Wes Anderson’s espionage black comedy that just debuted its first trailer earlier this week. Anderson returns to Cannes with a massive ensemble cast that includes Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hanks, and Willem Dafoe. The film is set to be one of the most talked-about premieres of the festival. Anderson debuted his last film, Asteroid City, at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023.
Also returning is Kelly Reichardt with The Mastermind, an art-heist drama starring Josh O’Connor (Challengers) and John Magaro (First Cow), marking a stylistic shift for the director known for her quiet, observational work.
Ari Aster is back in competition as well with Eddington, his highly anticipated Western follow-up to Beau Is Afraid. Aster’s film was announced alongside the reveal of its poster, stoking even more curiosity around what kind of surreal genre-warping experience he’ll deliver next.
Other big names include Joachim Trier, whose new film follows the global breakout success of The Worst Person in the World, and Julia Ducournau (Titane), who continues her run of visceral body horror. The Dardenne brothers, who have previously won the Palme d’Or twice, also return with a new project, reaffirming their long-standing relationship with the festival.
The jury for the 2025 Cannes Film Festival will be presided over by French icon and Oscar winner Juliette Binoche, taking on the role of jury president for the first time. Robert De Niro will be honored with an honorary Palme d’Or during the opening ceremony.
Cannes has only increased its influence as an Oscar bellwether in recent years. Palme d’Or winners like Parasite (Bong Joon-ho) and Anora (Sean Baker) went on to win Best Picture, while others like Triangle of Sadness (Ruben Östlund) and Anatomy of a Fall (Justine Triet) translated festival acclaim into major awards-season recognition.
