Every V/H/S Movie Ranked from Worst to Best

The V/H/S franchise has a track record of inconsistency, but has served as the proving ground for many directors that would go on to lead big blockbuster horror movies and independent classics. The likes of Ti West, David Bruckner, and Scott Derrickson have worked their way through the V/H/S system, starting with small, low budget segments of the popular anthology series in order to prove their talent behind the camera.

Many of these movies rely on their young cast and crew members in order to have staying power years in the future. That could partially be why I’ve ranked the V/H/S movies in this order today. Or maybe it is that some entries have a more consistent quality level than others. Regardless, this is how I would rank them as of the release of V/H/S/Beyond.

7. V/H/S: Viral (2014)

6. V/H/S/99 (2022)

vhs 99 2022

V/H/S/99 isn’t a complete dud as a few of the ideas do hold some weight, but it doesn’t hit the same gas pedal as the peak films did, and for an anthology, that can lead to casual viewers turning away. Fans of the franchise should still check it out, but for now it sits somewhere in the middle for me on the ranking for these movies.

5. V/H/S/Beyond (2024)

vhs beyond 2024

V/H/S/Beyond is the seventh installment of the cult classic horror anthology franchise V/H/S. After six, you’d think a series would begin to lose steam or run out of ideas, but this one has done the opposite. Since Shudder rebooted the franchise in 2021 with V/H/S/94, the popularity for it has grown more and more. Now, they feel like tentpole releases on the horror streamer’s October slate.

3. V/H/S/85 (2023)

vhs 85 2023

V/H/S/85 offers some of the most deranged moments in the franchise’s recent history, but occasionally loses steam as a product of half-baked concepts. David Bruckner and Mike P. Nelson stand out as the directors that utilize the form the best.
