The upcoming Mission: Impossible 8 now has its first teaser trailer and official title: The Final Reckoning. Originally intended to be called Dead Reckoning Part Two, it appears Paramount Studios opted for a new name, likely to avoid giving audiences the impression they need to see Part One first. This new title hints at a grand conclusion, as The Final Reckoning could be the last installment in Tom Cruise’s action-packed saga.
The Final Reckoning has faced multiple delays, leading to an 18-month production with costs approaching $400 million. It’s now set to release on May 23, 2025. Despite the extended production and soaring budget, I’m all in. The Mission: Impossible series remains one of my favorite franchises in modern Hollywood, and Dead Reckoning Part One was a standout film for me in 2023.
The new title lets the studio market The Final Reckoning as the last Mission: Impossible movie for Tom Cruise, despite Cruise’s insistence that Ethan Hunt’s story doesn’t end in tragedy. Still, it seems likely Mission: Impossible 8 may be Cruise’s final outing as Hunt, potentially paving the way for a younger actor to take over and steer the franchise in a fresh direction.
The Final Reckoning will be directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who has become a frequent collaborator with Tom Cruise over the past decade. Their partnership includes films like Jack Reacher, Top Gun: Maverick (where McQuarrie contributed as a writer), Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Rogue Nation, and Dead Reckoning Part One.
